The administration risks its move to regulate auto vehicle emissions
being viewed as a sham strategy while poor-quality fuels remain on the
market, an expert says.State oil and gas company Pertamina has
acknowledged the sulfur content of the diesel fuel it supplies ranges
from 3,500-5,000 particles per millimeter (ppm), far higher than the
Euro II standard of below 500 ppm.
Sulfur is the main contributor to the emission of pollutants nitrogen
oxide and particulate matter, said Ahmad Safrudin, the chairman of the
Joint Committee for Leaded Gasoline Phase-out, on Monday, adding that
there were inconsistencies in the government's clean air campaign.
Pertamina president director Ari Soemarno said the company was still
bound to contracts with a number of countries such as Kuwait, which
will continue supplying diesel with a sulphur content of 5,000 ppm
until June.
"We must abide by the contract," Ari said Saturday as quoted by Antara.
The government has ordered Pertamina to reduce the content of its
diesel to 500 ppm or below, starting Tuesday.

It made a similar request in March 2006.
"We can't implement it all at once. The government has allowed us to
delay it until June," Ari said.
Reducing the content of sulphur in diesel is part of the government's
efforts to meet the Euro II standard, which took effect here on Jan. 1.
