House Panel Says Toyota Misled Public on Safety
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/busin ... oyota.html
WASHINGTON — Leading Democrats on the House Energy and Commerce Committee said Monday that Toyota relied on a flawed study in dismissing the notion that computer issues could be at fault for sticking accelerator pedals, and then made misleading statements about the repairs.

wah sampe NHTSA kebawa2 :e-think:

saved $ 100 million then, loss hundreds of million later... nice move... i ain't genius, but probably smarter than those greedy salesmen...

Iya dong...
Toyota said on Tuesday that its global sales were 15% higher in January – when many of the recalls had already been announced – than they were a year ago.

Domestic sales jumped 45%, while overseas sales rose nearly 9%.
Gile, naik 45% di Jepang - banyak org TIDAK SMART di Jepang ya...kenapa gak beli Trajet semua ya biar SMART

Despite recalls, Consumer Reports names Honda Fit, Toyota Prius Best Values

CR chose the Honda Fit and Toyota Prius as its top picks for best overall value in the marketplace, despite Honda recalling more than 650,000 Fits and the issue plaguing the Toyota Prius, among the myriad of things that have kept ToMoCo busy lately. So before the complaints come in, perhaps a look at CR's methodology is in order. According to the presser after the jump:

"To determine which cars are the best values, Consumer Reports looked at a combination of performance, utility, and reliability for the money, considering total owner costs over the first five-years. The better a car performs in Consumer Reports' road tests and reliability Ratings and the less it costs to own, the greater its value."

Consumer Reports says the Honda Fit and the Toyota Prius bested 280 other cars in eight different categories to grab their top spots. Each recorded a score of 2.08 on their tally sheets, representing values that are more than twice as good as the overall average for the group. It could be argued that the recalls affecting the vehicles might have come too late in the game and/or may have not impacted their rankings significantly enough to erase the inherent value of each vehicle. And lest we forget, CR isn't alone in recognizing the Prius, with MotorWeek and Intellichoice both naming the Japanese hybrid to their awards this year.

Toyota Leads in NHTSA Unintended Acceleration Complaints, Edmunds.com Analysis Shows

February 22, 2010 — Santa Monica, CA — Of the Big Six automakers selling vehicles in the United States, Toyota — as a manufacturer and as an individual brand — has the most consumer complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for unintended acceleration, according to an Edmunds.com analysis of the government safety agency's data bases.

Unintended acceleration will be the hot topic of Congressional hearings Tuesday and Wednesday on Toyota's recalls for sticking accelerator pedals and floormats that can trap the gas pedal. Both situations have the potential to cause unintended acceleration.

Toyota Motor Corporation, consisting of its Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands, had 1,133 consumer complaints of unintended acceleration filed with NHTSA through Feb. 3. The complaints cover model years 2005 to 2010.

Toyota's number of complaints for unintended acceleration exceeds similar complaints for the other Big Six manufacturers combined.

Rounding out the Big Six are, in order of most complaints to fewest are, Ford Motor Company, consisting of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, with 387 complaints; Chrysler LLC, consisting of Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models, with 171 complaints; General Motors, consisting of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Cadillac, GMC, Saturn, Saab, Buick and Hummer brands, with 152 complaints; Honda, including its Acura division, with 113 complaints; and Nissan, including its Infiniti division, with 62 complaints.

The Toyota brand has the highest number of such complaints of any Big Six brand, with 929. Ford brand follows with 300 complaints. Toyota's Lexus ranks third with 186 complaints.

Toyota Motor Corporation models — Toyota Camry (290 complaints), Toyota Tacoma (184 complaints) and Lexus ES 350 (100 complaints) — rank 1, 2 and 3, respectively, for most complaints by model, in Edmunds.com's analysis, which ranks the vehicles on the raw number of complaints, not on a sales- weighted basis.

Nine of the top 12 models with the most complaints of unintended acceleration are made by Toyota. In addition to the Camry, Tacoma and ES 350, the other Toyota models among the top dozen are: Toyota Prius, No. 5 with 85 complaints; Toyota Avalon, No. 6 with 79 complaints; Toyota Tundra, No. 7 with 66 complaints; Toyota Corolla, No. 8 with 55 complaints; Toyota Highlander, No. 11 with 42 complaints; and Toyota RAV4, No. 12 with 41 complaints.

The top 12 list is rounded out by two Fords: Ford F-150 in the No. 4 position with 86 complaints and Ford Mustang, which was No. 9 with 53 complaints. Chrysler's Jeep Grand Cherokee was No. 10 with 46 complaints.

In an earlier tabulation of NHTSA complaints, Edmunds.com showed that Toyota had fewer filed consumer complaints in total than most automakers. Toyota ranked 17th of 20 automakers in the number of complaints filed with NHTSA over the past decade per new vehicle sold on the road. That analysis revealed that Toyota had 9.1 percent of the complaints from 2001 through 2010; during this period, the company sold 13.5 percent of all new cars in the United States.

In today's more detailed analysis, Edmunds.com's data and engineering team sifted through thousands of consumer complaints for just the top six manufacturers, reading specific complaints and properly classifying them in appropriate categories.

Toyota recall: What took so long?
By Ben Rooney, staff reporterFebruary 24, 2010: 7:00 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Lawmakers grilled Toyota's president, Akio Toyoda, in a hearing Wednesday aimed at discovering, among other things, why the automaker was slow to respond to safety issues related to sudden acceleration.

Mr. Toyoda acknowledged that the company had made mistakes and repeatedly apologized for the recent lapses in quality control. But he did not provide specific answers to questions about what the company knew about certain defects and when they were discovered.

Members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform repeatedly asked Mr. Toyoda if his company had provided U.S. safety regulators with all the information they requested.

"According to my understanding, we fully shared the information we have with the authorities," Mr. Toyoda said, speaking through a translator.

Mr. Toyoda, who is the grandson of the company's founder, read his opening remarks in English, but relied on a translator for the majority of his testimony. Yoshimi Inaba, the president of Toyota's North America division, testified before the committee in English.

Committee members also peppered the executives with questions about why Toyota didn't respond faster to customer complaints about sudden unintended acceleration.

In response, Mr. Toyoda acknowledged that the company's efforts failed to live up to its core values and pointed to the company's plans to set up a global commission to address complaints more quickly and efforts to increase transparency on safety issues.

However, some lawmakers did not find Mr. Toyoda's answers sufficient.

Marcy Kaptur, D-OH, said she was "disappointed" with Mr. Toyoda's testimony, adding that she did not feel he had shown sufficient remorse or taken enough note of the amount of complaints over the last decade.

The executives also came under fire for a 2009 memo in which Toyota staffers boasted of the company saving $100 million by negotiating a limited recall for certain cars.

Mr. Inaba, whose name appeared on the document, said the it was "inconsistent with the guiding principle of Toyota." He added that the report was made shortly after he rejoined the company and that he was not involved in writing it.

Toyota has been criticized for not responding quickly enough to customer complaints about sudden acceleration, which have been blamed for several accidents resulting in injuries or death. The automaker has recalled over eight million vehicles worldwide for this problem.

Mr. Toyoda attributed instances of unintended acceleration to certain factors, including the way the car is used or misused, and other "structural aspects." But he said he was "absolutely confident" that there are no defects with the design of Toyota's electronic throttle control system.

After the nearly three hour hearing was over, Mr. Toyoda told reporters that he plans to make "sweeping changes" at the automaker.

Going forward I intend to make every effort to achieve the transformation and rebirth of the company by making safety and 'customer first' the top priority," he said.

In response to the human toll of the company's safety problems, Mr. Toyoda extended his condolences to members of the Salyor family, who lost four members in a crash involving a recalled Toyota vehicle in San Diego.

"I would like to send my prayers again," Mr. Toyoda said. "And I will do everything in my power to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again."

However, when asked if Toyota would pay for the medical or funeral expenses for drivers killed or injured in crashes involving defective Toyota cars, the executives hedged.

Mr. Inaba said the question will be resolved by the company's legal team.

In his prepared remarks, Mr. Toyoda said the automaker's rapid growth over the last few years contributed to the recent lapses in safety and outlined new steps the company will take to ensure quality control.

Toyota will devise a system to convey customer complaints from around the world to the company's management in a timely manner, he said. It will also implement a system in which each region will be able to make recall decisions as necessary.

In addition, Toyota form a "quality advisory group" that Mr. Toyoda said will be "composed of respected outside experts from North America and around the world to ensure that we do not make a misguided decision."

Mr. Toyoda, who became the company's president in June, said the automaker will "invest heavily" in quality in the U.S. and will establish an Automotive Center of Quality Excellence and will introduce the new position of Product Safety Executive.

Toyota has grown its sales in recent years, outpacing General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) as the world's top-selling automaker. But its recent troubles have stained its reputation as a bright light in Japan's otherwise stagnant economy.

Prior to Mr. Toyoda's testimony, Department of Transportation secretary Ray LaHood testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He defended himself against criticism for not having taken enough action concerning the faulty vehicles.

"We haven't been sitting around on our hands," said LaHood. "When there needs to be a recall, we do it."

sptnya utk yg hybrid gini kita mesti agak sabaran...
apalagi kalo soal lingkungan hidup, pemerintah kita kurang care..lalu energi masih "murah berlimpah"..
hm..kalo pemerintahnya care lingkungan hidup, mestinya galakkin yg hybrid gini, pajaknya dimurahin..lalu infrastruktur dirapihin biar ga macet..skian juta liter terbakar percuma di jlnan. wah jadi oot deh.

berbagi info, dapet dari mobilkudotcom

=========

Semua model Toyota bakal pakai Brake Override System (mobilkudotcom)
