Toyota to build Thai diesel engine plant

TOKYO, June 10 (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday it would build a new 150,000 units-a-year diesel engine factory in Thailand for 17.3 billion yen ($162 million).

The plant, to be built at the site of its existing engine factory 70 km (43 miles) southeast of Bangkok, will raise Toyota's annual diesel engine output capacity to 350,000 units in 2010 and create about 700 jobs, Toyota said in a statement.

The expansion is aimed at meeting rising demand for the IMV vehicle series, consisting of pickup trucks, a minivan and a sport utility vehicle.

The local engine production company, Siam Toyota Manufacturing Co, employs 2,260 people and also assembles gasoline engines and driveshafts. ($1=106.71 Yen) (Reporting by Chang-Ran Kim; editing by Sophie Hardach)
