Honda Eyes Production Cut as Accord Hybrid Sales Fall

The move highlights the industry's uncertainty over the technology's popularity and future.

By John O'Dell, Times Staff Writer
April 14, 2006

Honda Motor Co. may be learning a hard lesson about hybrids: It's better to hold the horses.

A Honda executive said Thursday that the automaker might reduce production of its gas-electric Accord hybrid sedan because the vehicle, marketed as a performance model rather than a fuel miser, hasn't been selling as well as hoped.

It was the second time this week that auto executives attending the New York Auto Show have raised questions about the popularity of hybrid technology.

Nissan Motor Co. Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday that hybrid sales appeared to be slowing, something he has frequently suggested could happen as consumers weigh hybrids' extra sticker cost against their fuel economy.

Accord hybrid sales are off 51% from last year, when the model was introduced and was still a novelty because it mates a V-6 engine with Honda's hybrid electric drive system that gives it 253 horsepower, versus 244 in the non-hybrid model.

Dick Colliver, executive vice president of Torrance-based American Honda Motor Co., told the Associated Press that the gas-electric Accord was having "a hard time in the market." Consumers haven't been convinced that the hybrid Accord would provide much in the way of fuel savings, he said.

The hybrid model does deliver about 25% better fuel economy than the conventional V-6 gasoline Accord, but it also has a sticker price of $33,540, about $3,700 more than the gasoline model.

Not all hybrids are hurting: Sales of Honda's smaller Civic hybrid are up 32% this year.

But Toyota Motor Corp.'s Prius, while still the best-selling hybrid in the market, has dropped 3.3% below last year's pace to 22,123 sales for the first three months.

J.D. Power & Associates estimates that, overall, about 260,000 hybrids will be sold in the U.S. this year — about 1.5% of the passenger vehicle market.

Toyota still seems to believe that the idea of a performance hybrid will catch on — at least among luxury buyers.

The company's Lexus division announced Wednesday that it would introduce a sedan in 2008 that pairs a V-8 engine with a hybrid system, supercharging the gas engine. The new Lexus LS 600h would have about 420 horsepower — a record for a hybrid.

Toyota hybrids recalled for possible steering problem

May 31, 2006

The 2004 Prius may have a defect, Toyota said Tuesday. The company recalled nearly a million of its gas-electric hybrid models. (Associated Press)

Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it is recalling about two-thirds of the Prius gas-electric hybrid cars it has sold in the United States as part of a global effort to replace faulty parts that could cause drivers to lose steering control.

The recall affects about 986,000 vehicles across 10 models with more than half of the affected vehicles in Japan, company officials said.

In the United States, the recall includes about 170,000 of the Prius, the top-selling gas-electric hybrid. Owners of these cars will be getting letters by mid-June and can take their vehicles to a Toyota dealer to fix the steering shaft at no charge, said Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong.

Toyota has not received any complaints from U.S. consumers, but the company wanted to address the issue quickly to protect its reputation, Kwong said.

"We're very concerned," he said. "We're not going to wait until we get complaints from U.S. consumers."

In Japan, the recall involves a total of 565,756 vehicles manufactured under the Wish, [cencored], Prius, Corolla, Corolla Runx, Corolla Fielder, Corolla Spacio, Allex and Ractis brands between September 2002 and November 2005, according to the statement.

In Europe, the recall involves about 240,000 vehicles, including the Prius, Corolla and Avensis. An additional 10,000 vehicles are being recalled in other parts of the world, including China and New Zealand, he said.

The recall follows more than 30 complaints filed with Toyota since March 2004, the carmaker said. The company wasn't aware of any accidents attributed to the faulty parts, it said.

But the intermediate shafts and sliding yokes in the recalled cars lack the necessary strength and could distort or crack under strong pressure, causing drivers to lose steering control, the Japanese automaker said in a statement.

Binggung saya. Kalau batterynya cepat rusak masih wajar. Steering system ?

Hybrids hitting some potholes with pricing
By Kathleen Pender, San Francisco Chronicle
May 30, 2006

Thirty-seven percent of consumers say high gasoline prices have them thinking about replacing their cars with more fuel efficient vehicles. And half of those say they are considering a gasoline-electric hybrid, according to a new survey by Consumer Reports.

But when cost-conscious consumers actually look at hybrids, many of them will be turned off, predicts Douglas Love, a spokesman for Consumer Reports.

The first generation of hybrids, such as the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius, "were designed from the start to deliver great fuel economy," Love said. These cars use electric motors to supplement small gasoline engines for significant increases in mileage.

Although the tiny two-seater Insight is being discontinued, the Prius continues to fly off dealer lots, often at a premium over the sticker price. The Honda Civic Hybrid, another model designed mainly for mileage, is also selling well, but that's partly because of a redesign that has boosted sales of all Civics, including the non-hybrid version.

The same can't be said of some second-generation hybrids — such as the Honda Accord Hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h. They use the new technology mainly to enhance performance, with minimal improvements in fuel economy over their non-hybrid siblings.

These cars essentially use a small electric motor to supercharge a big six-cylinder gasoline engine, for faster acceleration. The slight increase in gas mileage — a few miles per gallon in most cases — is almost a byproduct.

All three initially were priced at large premiums over their non-hybrid counterparts.

That strategy has largely flopped. After an initial rise in interest, sales dropped off and the manufacturers were forced to offer incentives to move cars off the lots.

"Right now hybrid buyers don't care about the technology, they want better mileage," said Alex Rosten, manager of pricing and market analysis with Edmunds.com. "Our analysts have been saying once gas hits $3 a gallon and stays there, that's when the consumer mind frame would begin to change, and it has."

The Accord was the first hybrid to be offered with incentives. The price differential and (minimal) mileage gain were the two primary factors," Rosten said.

According to road tests performed by Consumer Reports, the Honda Accord Hybrid gets 25 miles per gallon on average (in city and highway driving) compared with 23 mpg for the Honda Accord EX V6 and 24 mpg for a Honda Accord EX with four-cylinders.

" Gila, cuman beda 2 mpg, kalau gitu, itu bahan untuk bikin hybrid componentnya juga makan banyak tenaga bumi dan pula bahan metal yang langka, untuk apa ? Malah lebih cepat habiskan energy dunia ! "

The base Accord hybrid starts at $30,990, compared with $27,300 for the non-hybrid, according to Edmunds.com.

"When the Accord hybrid first came out, it was selling at sticker or over, whereas non-hybrid Accords sell at $2,300 off sticker," said Rosten.

Honda sold 2,023 Accord Hybrids in April 2005 and only 614 in April 2006, according to Rosten.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid sport utility vehicle met a similar fate. It gets 22 mpg (tetap boros) on average, compared with 19 mpg for the standard Toyota Highlander (cuman beda 3 mpg, again what for ?), according to Consumer Reports. Yet the sticker price on the hybrid version is $39,895 compared with $32,465 for the non-hybrid Highlander.

"The Highlander is a great vehicle, but when you compare the cost to the increase in fuel economy," a lot of buyers get turned off, said Love.

Highlander Hybrid sales rose to 3,768 in April from 2,987 in March, thanks to an increase in sales incentives. The average incentive was $1,383 in April compared with $191 in January.

"It was just too expensive for most Highlander buyers," said Rosten.

The Ford Escape Hybrid also has been a disappointment.

"The problem with the Escape is similar to the Accord," says Anthony Pratt, a senior manager with J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting. "The fuel economy improvements aren't much better" than the standard Escape.

"Ford initially intended to price it $3,000 more than the non-hybrid version. Then they offered big discounts on the non-hybrid, so it got to be an $8,000 difference," Pratt said.

Last month, Ford started offering no-interest financing on the Escape hybrid and sales doubled.

"People are willing to buy, but they want this technology to be priced at a point where they can make an economic argument to do it," said Pratt. (Emang semua orang Amrik seperti Leonardo Di Caprio, pakai Prius dan bangga, nih gue green, mau selamatkan bumi. Other normal Americans are like us, we got kids to feed !) Kecuali semua orang kaya raya, ya ngak pusing balik modal, harga spareparts etc. Jangan sok bonafide conan !

The Toyota Prius and Honda Civic Hybrid also are priced at substantial premiums to their closest non-hybrid versions. (The Prius has no non-hybrid counterpart — which adds to its cachet.) But these hybrids are much cheaper than the newer ones and their gas savings comes closer to making up for the premiums. (Tentu saja, ada incentive pajak lagi !)

Two hybrids that are new for the 2007 model year — the Lexus GS 450h and Toyota Camry Hybrid — are moving more in the direction of fuel economy, Rosten said.

Still, if you really want to save money on gasoline, the most cost-effective way is to simply buy a smaller car. (YES !)

Berita bulan April? Sudah ketinggalan, tuh.

Ini berita bulan JUNI 2006, dari mobilku.com. Tidak mengherankan, mengingat harga minyak dunia sekarang, dan harga bensin yang terus naik :

Penjualan hybrid cetak rekor baru
