November 2005 – Arabian Automobile Co., Dubai & Northern Emirates Nissan national sales company, plans to go straight to the top of the small car sales charts in the UAE market with the launch of a compact duo that delivers interior roominess, high quality interiors and comfortable stress-free environment at an economy price tag.
The Tiida sedan and hatchback became instant best-sellers when first introduced in their homeland last year, proving that automotive rules can be broken by creating a small car that has the spaciousness, the comfort, and the luxury of a full-size upper-end sedan.
Tiida cars will be at the Arabian Automobiles Co. showrooms in November, bringing unprecedented style and comfort to a traditionally price-driven market segment where the bare essentials have been the dominant characteristics.
“Tiida is designed in a way to put a big interior in a small car,†said Micheal Ayat, General Manager of Arabian Automobiles Co. “The interior length, front to back, is more than 1.77 metres long – equal to or larger than some full-size luxury sedans.†Both the Tiida hatchback and sedan also feature large cargo areas, ideal for owners with highly active lives.
Ayat added: “With Tiida we expect to conquer the Hatch back segment in Dubai and Northern Emirates car market. The design of the car, the competitive price and the over all service AAC provide will give us the solid base to achieve our goal for Tiida to be the number one in sales position in the small car segment by the end of 2006.â€Â
First impressions are created by the Tiida’s advanced exterior design and styling, set off by an exceptional mirror-like finish provided by Nissan’s ‘Image Clarity Steel Sheet’ – a process that uses no fewer than four different coats and was previously applied only to luxury sedans.
The middle coat and clear coat are thickly applied to create a rich, reflective luster, emphasizing the flowing lines of the body and adding an extra touch of elegance.
Inside, the cabin provides 18 per cent more knee room and seven per cent more interior length than Tiida’s nearest class competitor. Cargo capacity (467 litres) is also the biggest in the small car segment.
The high roof means that even tall passengers enjoy sufficient headroom, while extra-wide door apertures and seats with high hip-points make getting in and out easy, natural, and comfortable.
Premium quality upholstery and trim combine synthetic leather and top-grade fabric, setting off the spacious seating that is normally exclusive to mid-size and full-size vehicles.
Under the hood, a newly-developed engine creates weight savings, power increase, and noise reduction. The1.6-litre HR16 couples to five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, producing 118 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 17kg-m of torque at 4,000 rpm.
The engine features many technological advances to enhance intake/exhaust efficiency, thermal efficiency and torque, while reducing noise and friction and delivering class-leading fuel economy.
Using only 7.0L/100 km, Tiida’s launch coincides with a growing market shift towards less thirsty engines prompted by the recent hike in fuel prices and their long-term upward trend.
Electronic power steering is a technological ‘first’ for Nissan and Tiida, replacing conventional hydraulics with an independent motor-powered system. Together with strut suspension up front and a multi-link beam axle in rear, superior aerodynamics (a wind-cheating drag co-efficiency of 0.29 zero front lift), ripple-control shock absorbers, and damper rebound springs, the Tiida delivers driving stability and ride comfort comparable to high-priced upper segment models.
Nissan’s reputation for engineered safety is reflected in the Tiida body design, where key parts of the body absorb the force of a collision (zone construction), and while active head restraints on the front seats and SRS dual airbags help prevent injury. The front seatbelts also feature two-stage load limiters to counter excessive deceleration forces, and pre-tensioners that eliminate any belt slack almost instantly.
Tiida is built on Nissan’s proven, flexible B-platform that is used in many markets around the world. It is the first alliance platform developed by Nissan and used by Nissan and Renault globally.
The basic B-platform architecture is so strong that the fundamentals make it engaging to drive, spacious and economical in every market, including a fully equipped version that has become one of the top 10 selling vehicles in Japan.
Tiida is now being produced for North America in Mexico a well as China, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, South Africa and India, but in every market, Tiida’s size is the story, offering an exceptionally efficient package on a compact footprint.
Built on a 2.6-metre C-segment-sized wheelbase, which helps handling dynamics, ride quality and roominess, Tiida has a segment-leading interior length of 177.13 cm, creating ample rear legroom of 62.72 cm – almost the same as a mid-size sedan.
The interior also has a very high quality look and feel, with large, comfortable seats and a range of available features and equipment. In the rear, the seating position feels more like a comfortable, supportive chair, rather than a flat cushion. Eyes closed, occupants wouldn’t know they were in an entry-level car.
Small cars are now the fastest-growing sector of the GCC market, topping 128,000 unit sales last year – 40 per cent of total passenger car sales. But current hatchbacks account for only eight percent of the small car segment, so Nissan sees a great market opportunity for the Tiida.
Just following existing market trends should see the Tiida hatchback establishing a dominant position. Executives at Nissan Middle East are confident they have a winner on their hands, as the Tiida starts with a clear lead over rivals in terms of spaciousness, comfort, style and value for money.
The hatchback’s rear seats recline up to 40 degrees and can be folded conveniently in a 6:4 split-off when extra luggage space is needed. Even when the rear seats are all the way back, there’s still room in the luggage compartment for two suitcases.
We expect Tiida’s quality will be among the top of its class. Its smart, stylish interior design and use of premium materials will surely help distance it from the competition.
Now we have a new entrant backed by the Nissan brand and the Nissan reputation, bringing unprecedented zest, inspiration, and stimulus to a market that is virtually untouched.
