Sepuluh mobil termahal

1. Pagani Zonda C 12 S 7.3 Convertible $598,025
2. Koenigsegg CCR $562,659
3. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo $555,000
4. Koenigsegg CC8S $522,120
5. Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren $450,000
6. Porsche Carrera GT $440,000
7. Maybach 62 $375,000
8. Rolls-Royce Phantom $328,750
9. Spyker C8 Double 12 S $325,560
10. Maybach 57 $324,000

The 19th-century American social arbiter, Ward McAllister, the man who originated the concept of defining elite groups by the numeral 400, once said, "A man with a million dollars can be as happy nowadays as though he were rich."

These days, however, for those looking to dabble in the world of ultra-expensive cars, a million doesn't go as far as it used to. In fact, if one bought the awesomely fast, incredibly [cencored] Saleen S7 Twin Turbo in Europe for $670,000, the change from that million would just about pay for gas and insurance.

The slide show that follows showcases the world's ten most expensive cars, and the models fall into two categories: street-legal racecars of the most exotic variety and sedans, such as Maybach cars from DaimlerChrysler (nyse: DCX - news - people )--mobile pleasure-domes that make BMW's 7 Series, Ford Motor's (nyse: F - news - people ) Jaguar XJ and anything else you would ordinarily call a "premium sedan," look like Saturns and Kias.

Just how rarefied are the world's ten most expensive cars? Put it this way: No Ferrari, Bentley or Lamborghini costs enough to make the list. In fact, those cars look almost commonplace in comparison.

The world's most expensive cars are evidence to support the saying, "It's lonely at the top." Take a look at the Web site for the Saleen Owners and Enthusiasts Club (http://www.saleenclub.net). The S7 discussion forum contains two posts from this year and two from last year--and the two from last year read, "I am going to get one someday," and "Don't I wish."

The desire behind these sentiments is understandable. The world's most expensive cars can transport you in the height of luxury--the Maybach 62 sedan has a refrigerator, cup holders that fit champagne flutes and rear seats that recline like international-business-class seats on planes--or at speeds that others cannot match. Saleen representatives estimate the S7 can reach 240 mph to 260 mph, which makes it the world's fastest street-legal car in production today. (Read more about the World's Fastest Cars.)

The S7 is not just the most expensive car in the world; it also costs over $115,000 more in Europe than in the U.S.--a price hike of 21%. This is because Saleen originally designed the car for the American market and must modify it to make it street legal in other regions.

"It would be difficult for someone to buy the U.S. version of the vehicle, bring it to Europe and have it pass certification without the assistance of the manufacturer," wrote John Matise, Saleen's vice president for international operations, in a recent e-mail message. For example, Saleen must modify the S7's exhaust system to meet certain European regulations.

Matise adds: "We are exploring bringing the car to Australia and New Zealand. These markets require the vehicle to be right-hand drive--which would be a major engineering change for us. Should we decide to move ahead, the Australian and New Zealand versions of the cars would be the most expensive [Saleen models in the world]."

Capped by the S7, the ten cars in the slide show are the most expensive street-legal cars in production in the world at press time. Although some cars on the list are not available in the U.S., we converted all base prices to U.S. dollars to determine each vehicle's place in the rankings. We based all conversions on current exchange rates.

In order to properly position some cars, like the S7, that have different base prices in different areas (not including such region-specific costs as taxes and destination charges), we fit each car into the rankings based on its highest base price in the world. Other cars have one base price that applies throughout the world. For each nameplate that was evaluated, we only looked at its most expensive model. For example, Dutch automaker Spyker makes several different editions of its C8 supercar, but we only included the most expensive one--the $326,000 C8 Double 12 S.

We spoke to all of the manufacturers represented in the slide show for verification of the statistics presented here. Moreover, to make sure we did not miss any vehicles that had a chance of qualifying for the list, we sent multiple e-mails or made multiple phone calls to each manufacturer--of whom we were aware--of original, exotic sports cars; not everybody responded. Since the only other kinds of vehicles we felt had a chance of making the list were the ultra high-end cars of Maybach, Rolls-Royce (other-otc: RYCEY - news - people ) and Bentley, we contacted those manufacturers and asked if they knew of any other similarly pricey luxury cars. All three said "no."

In searching for companies to contact, we encountered certain obstacles. Some automakers had what appeared to be either defunct contact information or no contact information listed on their Web sites. Some had Web sites that were not available in English. Some manufacturers would not participate in our survey (we received a few cryptic responses to our e-mails, such as "We are unable to assist at the moment," and "We cannot help you with your request."). And in a few cases, we had heard of some manufacturers but were unable to track them down.

However, we are confident that we heard back from any automakers that had the possibility of making this list.

In general, we only included factory-assembled vehicles of which multiple copies exist. Special prototypes were not what we had in mind.

In addition, some hot-rod shops can build, to a customer's specification, cars that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. These custom jobs are not the sort of thing we considered for this story. Nor did we consider kit cars, under the logic that things you build in your garage don't count. We also only considered original-issue cars, and not modifications of other manufacturers' vehicles.

With all of those conditions in mind, we have two final notes about the process of contacting manufacturers. The first is that three automakers--Ascari, SSC and Stealth Cars--could have automobiles that qualify for the list, but we were unable to establish contact with them despite weeks of trying. The second is that we were able to obtain American and/or European prices from some companies, but not global prices. Those companies were Lamborghini, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari and Bentley--and, again, this was after numerous attempts to secure the information. For those company's models, we fit their cars into the rankings based on the highest base prices of which we were aware.

The slide show that follows is a step into a world that few people ever see--a world that would appear rich even to rich people. To see the world's ten most expensive automobiles, please follow the link below
