Electronic devices ranging from beepers to cellphones blanket the planet with electromagnetic energy. To test circuits away from this background noise, engineers use rooms called anechoic chambers. The largest of these in the United States is the Benefield Anechoic Facility (BAF) at Edwards Air Force Base in California. For BMW it was the perfect place to test its 2004 5 Series and 6 Series cars. "We provided a quick turnaround," says Lt. Col. Lyn McNeely, who oversees the BAF. "They [BMW] will probably come back again."
