A NEW KING: Toyota retook the global sales crown from General Motors during the first half of the year. The Japanese automaker sold 4.97 million cars and trucks worldwide from January through June, beating GM's 4.67 million.

THE REASON: GM's sales are growing, but Toyota's are growing faster. The company has recovered from last year's Japanese earthquake, Thailand flooding and an embarrassing series of safety recalls.

THE OUTLOOK: It will be hard for GM to overtake Toyota in the second half as sales slow in Europe and China. But the company says it will see growth. Seventy percent of its U.S. models will be revamped or brand-new by the end of next year.

GM may decide to write-down slumping Peugeot shares

General Motors bought a seven-percent stake in Peugeot earlier this year for €320 million ($430M U.S.), the obvious aim being the $2 billion in savings from synergies like shared platforms, components and joint purchasing power. Yet the trouble that made the partnership worthwhile for Peugeot has only got worse since the agreement was signed: it had to issue stock for GM to buy, depressing its share price. It later sold its Paris headquarters to raise money, but its plan to cut jobs and reduce overcapacity – the European industry's number one bugbear – has been repeatedly nixed by the French government. According to reports, Peugeot is losing more than $200 million every month and the government's new plan to help it sell more cars is of dubious near-term value.

According to Reuters, those developments have had a deleterious effect on Peugeot's stock price, and by extension, the value of GM's stake. What cost The General €320M four months ago is now worth €146M ($180M U.S.), leading GM to consider taking an impairment charge on the loss of value. GM feels the situation is temporary and that the price will recover as the European industry picks up, and to be fair, analysts and other observers also expect things to recover – predictions have ranged from late next year to the next two years, but no one knows when. GM has only said that if the situation doesn't change in the "near-term," it will take the charge but hold onto the stake "until its fair value recovers."

Toyota increases sales forecast, logs big quarterly profit

Despite a recession in Europe and a shaky economy in North America, Toyota Motor Corp. is having a good year. So good that it raised its estimate for the number of cars the Japanese automaker will sell globally this year to a record 9.76 million, up 23% from last year.

That would guarantee that Toyota would surpass General Motors Co. to regain its spot as the world’s largest automaker.

A host of new models and a rebound from the production and inventory problems caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami last year are responsible for Toyota’s gains.

The improvement was evident in the latest U.S. sales numbers. Through the first seven months of the year, Toyota sales have risen 28% to more than 1.2 million vehicles. Its share of the U.S. market has climbed to 14.4% from 12.8% during the same period a year ago.

The redesigned Toyota Camry is a big reason why. With sales up 40% to almost 244,000 vehicles, it is the best selling passenger car in America by a wide margin.

Sales like this helped Toyota post a fiscal year first-quarter profit of 290.3 billion yen ($3.7 billion,) up from 1.1 billion yen in the same period a year earlier. Its revenue jumped nearly 60% to 5.5 trillion yen ($70.5 billion.)

"Toyota’s recovery has been a remarkable one this year. The automaker not only regained all of the lost market share they suffered in 2011 but they also brought their average transaction prices to over $28,000 [in the U.S.] for the first time ever,” said Jesse Toprak, an analyst for auto price information company TrueCar.com
