PSA Peugeot Citroën Wins Prestigious International Engine of the Year Award for Third Year in a Row
The International Engine of the Year award in the 1.4-litre to 1.8-litre category was once again won by the 1.6-litre, four-cylinder direct injection turbo petrol engine designed by PSA Peugeot Citroën in cooperation with BMW Group.
Introduced in 2007 on the Peugeot 207, the 175-hp version of the engine also equips the Peugeot 308 THP 175. It is part of a full range of 1.4-litre to 1.6-litre engines that deliver from 95 to 175 hp and up to nearly 200 hp on certain models.

By winning the overall International Engine of the Year Award for the second consecutive year, VW’s innovative TSI Twincharger has proved it’s no one-hit wonder. In fact, only two other engines throughout the 12-year history of the International Engine of the Year Awards have won the overall award back-to-back: first BMW’s 5-litre V10 heart in 2005 and 2006, and then the Bavarian car maker’s 3-litre twin turbo unit, which was victorious in 2007 and 2008.
So, Wolfsburg’s TSI Twincharger joins an exclusive club, but it had to work hard to gain membership, beating the 2007 and 2008 champion by only 19 points in this year’s race.
Like last year, VW’s 1.4-litre unit managed to gather points from markets outside Europe, with judges in North America, Asia and South America all awarding top marks. “Last year’s IEOTY is still the most accurate, efficient pointer to the future of petrol power. It was an easy choice,†said Australian-based motoring journalist Bill McKinnon. Canadian Jim Kenzie was equally impressed: “The VW Twincharger engine remains the best combination of various technologies to produce high power with low emissions and fuel consumption.â€Â
The four-cylinder combines a turbocharger and supercharger in one compact unit. The result is power of up to 178bhp, but what’s most impressive is the engine’s specific power that attains 127.1bhp per litre of displacement. And with 240Nm of torque coming good at 1,500rpm, it’s easy to see why the jurors that look for performance and sporty characteristics were impressed.
But power is just part of the story for this year’s International Engine of the Year. The TSI derivative mated to VW’s DSG system emits 144g CO2/ km, and in a Golf application, while fuel consumption is rated at 6.2 l/100km (45.5mpg). With those figures, it’s little wonder that TSI twincharger yet won.

The BMW X3 took first place, with owners finding the SUV’s engine and gearbox as sturdy as a rhinoceros bouncer. The Porsche (the 911) was placing just 48th and the Audi TT can only muster a best placing of 63r.
Seven of our ten most reliable cars hailing from Japan. Three Hondas - the Jazz (3rd), S2000 (7th) and CR-V (8th), join the Toyota MR2 (2nd), Lexus RX3000, Suzuki Ignis (5th) and the Mazda 3 (10th) in the upper echelons of the customer satisfaction league.
Eight out of the ten least reliable cars come from across the Channel, with the Peugeot 807 propping up the table: two further Peugeots (the 307 and 407), a pair of Citroens (C3 and C8) and a trio of Renaults (the Megane, Espace and Scenic). The Range Rover and Ford S-MAX are on the same list.
Best/worst for build quality
Sixteen of the 25 worst-built cars in the survey are the spawn of the unholy Peugeot-Citroen-Renault triumvurate, and it’s no surprise to find the Peugeot 807 propping up the list again.
On the best-built cars the Honda S2000 tops the list, with slightly obsessed owners revelling in the tactile ’feel’ of the mechanical components and, perhaps a touch worringly, the pleasant smell of their roadster.
The S2000 edges a brace of Lexuses - the RX300 (3rd) and IS200/300 (5th) - the Toyota Landcruiser (7th) and Honda Jazz (6th).
The top ten also finds room for a pair of Audis - the A2 (4th) and old TT (8th) - and the Porsche 911 (10th), while Skoda’s Superb achieves an, erm, superb finish in ninth place.

For the experiment, 72 entrants from 18 countries drove the four models using 1000km of normal roads between Paris and Geneva in a range of weather conditions.
The result? They were not so much matched as shattered. The best return was a fraction shy of 90mpg and, what is more, this wasn't in a tiny city car, hybrid or specially adapted vehicle. It was in a standard production Peugeot 5-door 308 HDi 110 model, driven over 1000kms of French and Swiss roads in heavy wintery conditions. Official government fuel economy figures for this model are less than 60 mpg. Even Peugeot's new 7-seat 5008 MPV returned economy figures of nearly 85mpg.
