While Suzuki has enthralled high-performance motorcycle enthusiasts with bikes like the Hayabusa and GSX-R, the company's automobiles have traditionally been less flamboyant, characterized primarily by small-yet-efficient people haulers. But things are slowly changing. Suzuki has injected some of the sport usually reserved for its motorcycles into its cars. The latest to get this treatment is the Kizashi.

Although Suzuki's all-new sedan is hardly the automotive equivalent of the GSX-R, it is the sportiest sedan the company has produced. For proof, just take a look at the Kizashi's exterior. It's sporty from every angle, especially the face that's highlighted by large canted headlights and a wide rectangular grille. The lines flow from front to rear, with blacked-out B-pillars and a rear end that features a subtle spoiler lip on the trunklid. The Kizashi is significantly larger than the SX4, measuring 183.1 in. long, 71.1 in. wide and 58.3 in. high.

But what impressed us about the car was how well it behaved on the road. With its 2.4-liter inline-4 sending 185 bhp to the front tires (an all-wheel-drive version will also be a part of the mix), we knew the Kizashi would be quick for its class, but we didn't expect how well the front tires would hook up. Torque steer was completely absent off the line, the launch eliciting a chirp from the Dunlop tires. The engine revs smoothly to its 6500-rpm redline, with much of its 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque coming on low in the rpm range. The car ran to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds and to the quarter mile in 16.0 at 88.0 mph. This puts it in the same league as the more expensive 4-cylinder Acura TSX (7.8 and 15.9 sec., respectively), and smokes a comparably priced Jetta 2.5 (9.8 and 17.3, respectively).

Our test car was equipped with the 6-speed manual gearbox, but those who prefer keeping their right hand on the steering wheel can opt for the CVT transmission.

Through corners the Kizashi doesn't disappoint. The steering feels quick and precise, while the independent suspension performs an admirable job of keeping body roll in check. The Kizashi exhibits moderate understeer in steady-state cornering, yet as far as front-wheel-drive cars go, the Kizashi's overall handling is on par with its counterparts from Honda. Its performance around the skidpad (0.78g) and through the slalom (62.2 mph) confirmed this.

The Kizashi is also adept on the open road, exhibiting an even ride and boasting impressively low sound levels in the cabin. There's a plenty of head- and leg room in the front seats for taller people, while the rear will easily accommodate two adults, three in a pinch. Those taller than 6-ft. 2-in. may feel that knee room is somewhat tight back there, but the rest of us who are at or slightly above the national average are just fine. What's impressive here is the high-quality feel of the interior — the materials used on the dashboard and door panels are first-rate, and its overall look certainly climbs a few rungs on the ladder of sophistication.

When the Kizashi hits dealer showrooms in December, it will definitely make an impact in the marketplace, especially considering that this new Suzuki sports sedan should start at a base price of around $20,000.

First Test: 2010 Suzuki Kizashi
Charging Up the Paddles and Reaching For the Atropine
October 16, 2009
/ By Kirill Ougarov

Anyone who's ever watched a doctor drama is no doubt familiar with the famous defibrillator paddles, but there's another common treatment for cardiac arrest -- a drug called atropine -- that's also used to help speed up an unusually slow heart. With Suzuki's U.S. automotive operations in danger of flatlining (sales are off a whopping 55 percent so far this year versus 2008), the automaker is hoping its new 2010 Kizashi midsize sedan will be the shot of atropine it needs to get its sales rate back to normal. Otherwise, the paddles are likely coming next.

The Kizashi is Suzuki's first homegrown midsize offering (its previous midsizer, the Verona, was a rebadged Daewoo) and the Japanese automaker went with a more unconventional approach while designing the stylish sedan. Since the discontinuation of the Daewoo-sourced Reno and Forenza, Suzuki has been working to reposition itself as a brand that appeals more to enthusiasts rather than those in need of cheap transportation.

So does the Kizashi hit the mark?

Well, mostly. For starters, the Kizashi is undersized for the segment. At 183.1 inches, it's about 5-6 inches longer than most compacts and 5-6 inches shorter than typical midsizers. Its 106.3-inch wheelbase is substantially shorter than that of a Camry or Malibu. But despite the smaller exterior dimensions, the Kizashi's interior space doesn't suffer noticeably. There's enough space for a 6-foot-four driver to fit in the rear seat with legroom to spare and just a slight amount of forward-hunching required to not hit the ceiling. Up front, even with a moonroof fitted, there's plenty of headroom. Add in the considerable amount of travel in the telescoping steering wheel, and we're betting taller folks won't be complaining about lack of space in the cabin.

The Kizashi's interior is also highlighted by high-quality materials and a rich list of features befitting Suzuki's "premium without the premium" mantra. Depending on the trim level, these include auto up/down-power windows on driver and passenger sides, satellite radio, dual climate control, and standard Bluetooth.

At launch, there's only one engine available -- a 2.4-liter four-cylinder making 185 horsepower and 170 pound-feet when paired with the six-speed manual. Opting for the optional CVT, which comes with steering-wheel-mounted paddles, takes away 5 horsepower. This power drop wasn't noticeable on the road, though it will probably manifest itself in the form of an extra tenth or two during instrumented testing. In auto mode, the CVT works as well as any other unit, but it is programmed to hold specific ratios in manual mode. A hybrid version of the Kizashi is on the way and the addition of a V-6 is being debated within the company.

This four-banger is no slouch. The Kizashi outruns all the contenders in last year's "Familial and Frugal" comparison of four-cylinder midsize sedans, save the first-place Volkswagen Passat, requiring just 7.6 seconds to reach 60 mph and finishing the quarter mile in 15.9 seconds at 87.1 mph. It also fared well in our MT handling tests, putting up an impressive 0.85 g on the skidpad and a time of 27.5 seconds @ 0.60 g around our figure-eight course -- besting the Passat in the former and virtually even with it in the latter.

Opinions on the Kizashi's on-road handling are all over the place. Yours truly found the chassis solid with acceptable bodyroll and surprisingly neutral for a front-heavy FWD sedan, exhibiting minimal understeer -- though steering, pedal feel, and shifter precision all left something to be desired. Technical director Frank Markus, however, felt it had too much roll, stability control intervened too early, and tire and bushing deflection rates weren't properly matched. He concluded that the Kizashi "feels like a car that had very little chassis development time -- as if they switched chassis on the engineers at the last second," a distinct possibility given that the Kizashi was originally expected to be built on GM's Epsilon platform before the two automakers parted ways.

The Kizashi also has extra marketing leverage in the form of available all-wheel drive, a rarity in the segment. When fitted with the AWD system, the Kizashi gains a few pounds, but the rear feels more planted. Additionally, the Kizashi comes standard with eight airbags and meets the newly mandatory Euro NCAP pole side-impact test due to being a global offering, so it has plenty of safety credentials plus Suzuki's lengthy 7-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Overall, The Kizashi is a solid value with enthusiast credentials and while it's probably not going to set any sales records, it should perform well enough in the market to keep Suzuki's American operations from going code blue.

Suzuki Kizashi has the broad-shouldered stance of an athlete, dressed in the elegant lines of a European luxury car. That's one reason Time.com ranks it among the Most Exciting Cars of 2010.(2)

Baleno seharusnya SX4 sedan.
