NHTSA Investigates More Toyota Models for Fire Hazard

In February, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating Toyota Camry sedans and RAV4 crossovers from the 2007 model year after owner reports of door fires. NHTSA has expanded the investigation, which now includes 2007 to 2009 Toyota Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 and Yaris models. Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUVs from the 2008 model year are also included.



According to a NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) document, faulty wiring in the power window master switch assembly in the driver’s side door can overheat or cause an electrical fire. Toyota models being investigated were built from September 2006 to August 2008. The ODI document also indicates that there have been 161 complaints of crashes or fires and nine injuries. The Associated Press says that the initial investigation included more than 800,000 Toyota vehicles, but has now increased to more than 1.4 million vehicles.



A Toyota spokesman told the Associated Press if owners of the affected vehicles smell smoke or find that the doors are hot, they should take their vehicles to their Toyota dealership for an inspection.
