These are cars we fondly remember as rolling boat payments. We'd see them coming into the shop — usually on the back end of a tow truck — and we'd know it would be a good month. Unfortunately, these manufacturers are now on our fecal roster because they've pulled out of the U.S. market. Fiat and Alfa may come back in the next few years, even if they have to sneak in disguised as Chryslers. We just hope they haven't improved too much.

We could live with all the other cars on this list if we could just have a dozen customers with these heaps. Guys, please come back! We miss you!

PEUGEOT 207 (1 STAR)

Adult occupant: The rating for the vehicle was limited to 1 star due to the unacceptably high risk of life threatening injury to the driver's head presented by the steering wheel. The protection offered to the driver's lower legs was weak due to high rearward clutch and break pedal displacement. There were hazardous structures in the area of the fascia that could be impacted by an occupants knees. The body shell was not capable of withstanding further loading. The ruptures to the footwell threatened the driver's feet. The car has an airbag control tell-tale (light) in the instrument panel which will be illuminated after turning the ignition key and making contact. Unfortunately there were NO AIRBAGS in this car. The tell-tale may mislead consumers.

Adult occupant: The protection offered to the driver was poor for most body regions, the chest protection was weak. High loads were placed on all areas of the driver dummy. A significant amount of body shell collapse results in high displacement of the A-pillar, steering column and pedals. The body shell was not capable of withstanding any further loading. Installing an airbag in this car would not improve occupant protection as the body shell integrity is not good. Probably an airbags in this car would not improve the week body shell integrity. This car has a passenger airbag switch but it DOES NOT have an airbag. This device may mislead consumers to think that they have an airbag equipped car while it is not the case.

Despite tough year, Toyota finishes 2010 with best-selling car, brand and luxury marque titles

By most accounts, Toyota didn't have the rosiest of years in 2010. Hounded by safety recalls, lawsuits and government investigations, the automaker saw its once spotless reputation grow more sullied by the month. Still, it's important to note that none of these issues stopped the Japanese automaker from snagging some impressive U.S. sales titles, including the best-selling car (Camry), brand (Toyota) and luxury marque (Lexus) for 2010. All told, the entire company saw 1,763,595 sales through 2010 – a number that's more or less comparable to its 2009 figures. The Toyota brand itself walked away with 1,534,266 of those sales, while Lexus sent home 229,329 units and Scion managed to move a further 45,678 vehicles.

While the Toyota division's sales stayed flat for 2010 compared to 2009, Lexus sales jumped by 6.9 percent. The luxury brand's increase was driven largely by its light truck sales, which were up 13.3 percent compared to 2009.

Toyota, BP among America's most hated firms

WASHINGTON - TOYOTA and BP have joined a familiar cast of airlines, banks and telecoms providers as the most loathed companies in the United States, according to a survey published on Thursday.


The list of 15 'most hated American companies of 2010', compiled by website 24/7 Wall St is dominated by technology firms, which rank poorly in consumer and employee polls, stock market performance and press coverage last year.


AT&T is on the list for having patchy service, Dell for its shabby electronic store and fragile laptops, while satellite provider Dish Network features after a third of customers described its service as poor.


Dish Network's competitor DirecTV was also listed for perceived gouging through automatic contract extensions, and a 480 dollar cancellation fee.


Nokia, the world's biggest mobile phone company, saw its star fade thanks to customer complaints and a poor ranking for design.


But tech firms are not consumers' only source of angst. McDonald's, described by the authors as 'poster child for unhealthy food in America', is 'among the most savagely criticised firms', earning it an appearance on the list according to the website. -- AFP
