S&P: Toyota still flush with cash reserves

Record fines from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pending litigation from a number of private individuals and insurance agencies and the largest recall in its history haven't managed to impact Toyota's bottom line all that badly. According to the Standard & Poor's Valuation and Risk Strategies group, Toyota still has the most cash reserves of any automaker in the world. The total? Well over $48 billion.

In fact, Toyota is listed as having the second largest-cash pile of all companies, regardless of what market they play in, though Apple would push Toyota to third if S&P counted the tech giant's money differently. Other automakers with lots of dough on hand include Volkswagen (seventh), General Motors (eighth) and Ford (thirteenth). For what it's worth, General Electric tops the list with enough coin to keep Scrooge McDuck busy for days.

Report: Toyota remains world's largest automaker for third year in a row despite troubles
Despite weathering a rocky 2010 marked by repeated recalls, Toyota managed to remain the world's largest automaker last year. According to Bloomberg, the Japanese manufacturer saw its sales rise by eight percent to 8.42 million units if you include Lexus, Hino and Daihatsu. That figure beat out General Motors, which saw its sales increase by 12 percent with 8.39 million units sold.

While Toyota's sales in the U.S. market dropped by 0.4 percent due to safety concerns, the automaker saw large increases in China. The company's sales in the People's Republic jumped by 19 percent, though General Motors saw its Chinese sales increase by 29 percent.

Volkswagen, meanwhile, managed to move 7.14 million vehicles during 2010, cementing its place as the third-largest automaker in the world. That figure marks a 14 percent increase over 2009, and VW says that it fully expects to see sales increase by five percent in 2011.

Toyota is forecasting its sales to hit 8.6 million vehicles in 2011.

Toyota Motor (TM) managed to hold onto the title of world's No. 1 automaker last year, despite numerous safety recalls that took a toll on its sales.

Toyota, which saw its sales rise 8% last year despite its recall woes, sold 8.42 million vehicles worldwide in 2010, news agencies reported Monday. That was enough to barely edge out a resurgent General Motors (GM), which rang up sales of 8.39 million, a 12.2% increase from the previous year. Toyota surpassed GM in 2008 as the world's largest supplier of motor vehicles.

GM fell about 28,000 vehicles shy of surpassing Toyota in 2010, compared to a difference of some 330,000 vehicles in 2009, Dow Jones Newswires reported. Strong sales in China, where Toyota has less of a foothold, helped Detroit-based GM to narrow the sales gap with its Japanese rival.

GM's sales soared 29% in China, home to the world's largest car market, surpassing Toyota's 19% gain there, Reuters reported. In the U.S., GM saw its sales grow 6.3% last year, slower than the industry average but ahead of those of Toyota, which were flat last year.

"Looking at the current sales momentum, it's hard to say whether Toyota will be able to keep its top position for a fourth straight year" in 2011, Mamoru Kato, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Center, told Dow Jones.

GM and Ford Come On Strong

Although its sales rose in 2010, Toyota struggled throughout much of the year due to massive safety recalls of cars, trucks and SUVs worldwide. Overall, the carmaker recalled some 8.5 million vehicles, mostly to repair problems related to sudden unintended acceleration, for which Toyota faces numerous lawsuits. The company's behavior regarding the recalls led to nearly $50 million in fines from U.S. regulators.....
