Toyota Camry Tops List of Most Stolen Vehicles

Chances are that if you own a Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, you've already heard the news: those two sedans are the most commonly stolen vehicles in the United States.

And the news for the rest of us doesn't seem too uplifting: after a ten-year decline in auto theft rates, newly released statistics indicate auto theft is on the rise in the United States. All of this optimistic news is courtesy of the National Insurance Crime Bureau, who annually issues a list of the nation's most commonly stolen vehicles.

Recent statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Uniform Crime Report show auto theft rates increased 1.2 percent from 1999 to 2000. There were 1,165,559 auto thefts in 2000, compared to 1,152,057 in 1999. The NICB uses data from the FBI report to compile its annual study of theft rates and most commonly stolen vehicles.

"The troubling 2000 statistics indicate we need to commit more resources to address this problem and help prevent this increase from becoming a trend," stated Robert M. Bryant, NICB president and chief executive officer.

And for more troubling statistics, we turn to the list of most commonly stolen vehicles:

1. Toyota Camry
2. Honda Accord
3. Oldsmobile Cutlass
4. Honda Civic
5. Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
6. Chevrolet Full Size C/K pick-up
7. Toyota Corolla
8. Chevrolet Caprice
9. Ford Taurus
10.Ford F150 pick-up

"The study confirms that thieves target a wide range of popular passenger
vehicle models," said Bryant. "Thieves typically choose these vehicles
because of their huge profit potential when the cars are stripped down to
their components, which then supply a vast black market for stolen parts.
Further, these vehicles are popular in other countries and organized theft
rings will illegally export them to foreign destinations."

He also pointed out there are city-by-city differences in consumer vehicle
preference that affect which vehicles are targeted by thieves in an
individual metropolitan area.

For example, the NICB study shows American cars are more attractive to
thieves in cities such as Chicago, while pickups are more frequently stolen
in Dallas. In the Los Angeles area, thieves prefer Japanese models.Bryant
also recommended that people residing in or near port and border communities take special care to protect their vehicles because of the relatively easy access border crossings and ports provide to vehicle thieves.

The NICB suggests consumers play a vital role in stopping auto theft. To
help protect their vehicles, the NICB recommends that motorists ALWAYS
remove keys from the ignition and vehicle, lock the doors, close the
windows, hide valuable items, park in well-lit areas and use a combination
of anti-theft devices.

bukannya begitu mas, tapi pencuri itu pintar lho, mereka gak mau curi mercedes keluaran tahun 95 keatas karena kualitas mercedes sudah sangat anjlok sekali for the last 10 years

pencuri itu jelas maunya cuma curi barang bagus (best value), bukan junk products

in this case, mercedes is no longer a best value car, sad but true.

perusahaan taxi di Germany saja belakangan ini ogah memakai mercedes sbg fleet mereka karena model baru mercedes itu harga jual kembalinya jatuh lebih banyak dan kualitasnya jauh lebih buruk dibandingkan dengan previous model mercedes (yg dibawah th.95). malahan dari research yg dilakukan oleh sebuah badan penelitian (semacam badan pelindung konsumer) di Germany menunjukkan bahwa kualitas mercedes sekarang ini cuma setara dengan opel, salah satu merek mobil eropa yg terkenal mempunyai image kualitas terburuk.

memang kenyataannya tuh kualitas mercedes sekarang sudah sangat jatuh sekali, sudah tidak seawet dulu. keanjlokan kualitas mercedes ini sebenarnya sudah merupakan rahasia umum di kalangan masyarakat eropa dan amerika, cuma kebetulan di indonesia saja masih banyak masyarakat indo yg masih belum tau tentang ini. harus disadari, banyak wartawan otomotif indo yg dibayar oleh pihak-pihak dealer sehingga tidak men-reveal hal-hal yg buruk dan hanya menulis hal-hal yg bagus saja di majalah-majalah dan koran-koran di indonesia. sedangkan kalau di luar negeri, wartawan otomotifnya itu sangat netral sehingga hal-hal yg buruk tentang suatu merek mobil sudah pasti akan di-reveal juga, sehingga konsumer menjadi aware akan masalah tsb.

hahahaha, betul juga, tuh di amerika dan eropa, penjualan mercedes kan turun banyak, yah salah satu penyebabnya karena anjloknya kualitas mercedes selama 10 tahun belakang ini. sayang memang, mercedes yg dulunya terkenal sbg mobil berkualitas awet, ternyata sekarang kualitasnya kaya sampah. yah jelas donk, siapa mau ngeluarin uang utk ngebeli mobil yg berkualitas buruk?

kalo gue ada pilihan, gue lebih baik beli tiger daripada any mercedes model keluaran th.95 keatas. mercedes sekarang ini cuma bagus di design luarnya aja, kualitas mechanicalnya/engineeringnya serta kualitas accesories interiornya itu buruk sekali, bahkan karet yg men-seal kaca/jendelanya serta body luarnya pun gampang sekali copot padahal usia kepemilikan baru setahun (temen gue pernah mengalami masalah ini), mercedes sekarang ini laksana cewe yg super cakep tapi isi dalam hatinya itu busuk sekali. kayaknya bener pepatah "don't judge a book by its cover."

Setelah dibaca2... ternyata pendapat bung baronfh yang paling saya setujui ( EASIER To Sell ! ). Karena memang berdasarkan artikelnya juga, bahwa mobil2 tsb mudah dijual lagi dan pasti peminatnya juga banyak.

Sama lah seperti di sini (Indo). Yang dicari kebanyakan KIJANG. Karena gampang dijual di pasar gelap dan peminatnya buanyak...

misalnya neh, ada yang butuh spare part tertentu yang susah banget dicari. biasanya kita pasti dateng ke tempat2 onderdil bekas tuh. di bandung, kalo gak salah di daerah pajajaran [nurtanio], lupa nama tempatnya.
