Toyota Develops Next-generation Engine Valve Mechanism

Post by conan »

TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announced today that it has developed Valvematic*, a variable valve lift mechanism created through combining VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), which continuously controls intake valve opening/closing timing, with a new mechanism that continuously controls the intake valve lift volume.

While conventional engines control air intake using a throttle valve, Valvematic adjusts the volume of air taken in by continuously controlling the intake valve lift volume and timing of valve opening and closing. This ensures optimal performance based on the engine's operational condition, thus helping vehicles achieve both high fuel efficiency and dynamic performance.

In the case of a new 2.0-liter engine developed by Toyota, Valvematic—which further evolves the gasoline engine—improves fuel efficiency by 5% to 10% (depending on driving conditions), reduces CO2 emissions, boosts output by at least 10% and enhances acceleration responsiveness. TMC plans to introduce Valvematic shortly, starting with a new vehicle model featuring a 2.0-liter engine.

TMC positions global environmental preservation and initiatives toward energy diversification as a priority management issue in terms of its corporate social responsibility. As a part of its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions through high fuel efficiency and to achieve cleaner exhaust emissions, TMC plans to completely revamp its gasoline engine and transmission lineup by 2010.
I think the model referred to is the new generation Toyota Wish, due Q3/Q4 2007 :

Controll intake doang ya..? Kira2 apa beda nya ama Vanos ..?

Malah setau gw Double Vanos nya BMW sudah "continuosly controls both intake and exhaust .... " . CMIIW.

IMHO :

Valvematic Toyota sudah setara Valvetronic BMW, alias kontrol timing intek & exhaust cam serta valve lift control utk intake valve. CMIIW

CMIIW, kalo menurut pendapat anda bung Turboman, artinya ini perpaduan VVTL-i dengan Dual VVT-i? Berarti ini semi Dual VVTL-i dimana intakenya VVTL-i dan exhaustnya VVT-i? hehehehe...

Dan kayak nya sama jg dgn DCVCP versi terbaru (Double Continuous Variable Cam phase) dari General Motor, yg akan dipake di Saturn Sky Red Line 2007 (versi mesin GDI).

"
General Motors will introduce its new and most powerful Ecotec 2.0-liter direct injection turbo engine in the 2007 Saturn SKY Red Line at the New York International Auto Show. It produces 260 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (*), making it GM's highest specific output engine ever, at 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch of displacement. The Saturn SKY Red Line and the Pontiac Solstice GXP are GM's first spark ignition direct injection offerings for North America. Gasoline direct injection technology helps the Ecotec engine produce more power while maintaining the lower fuel consumption of a small displacement port-injected engine. Variable valve timing and an intercooled, twin-scroll turbocharging system are used to optimize the Ecotec 2.0-liter Turbo engine's performance."

"Dual Cam Phasing"

The camshafts of the Ecotec 2.0-liter Turbo engine have phasers that support the continuously variable intake and exhaust valve timing. They also have cam position sensors, so that the engine control module can accurately control valve timing. The crankshaft and camshaft position sensors are digital. A new engine controller, specific to the engine, is used to sense and control the engine's performance parameters".

IMHO :

TSI / BMW Twin Turbo 335i / Pug. 1.6 Turbo/ Audi TFSI etc.

Koreksi kalau salah.

Mr. Turboman memang benar,

CMIIW

By spec Captiva gasoline yg mo dilaunch itu peak torque nya di 2200 RPM. HP max nya di 5000 RPM. Itu bener nggak ya...? Curiga gw jgn2 salah terjemahin dari bahasa Korea .... :D

Bukannya ini setara valvetronic yah? sepertinya merk Jepang tidak kalah menguasai teknologi turbo/supercharger, hanya saja mereka (terutama honda bmw ferrari) masih mau menghemat teknologi & disamping alasan2 lain N/A spt; pengendalian, durability, dll.
sejak lama honda & juga merk2 jepang lain sudah mengaplikasikan turbo pada mesin kecil apalagi mobil kecil JDM, misal jaman 80an honda city turbo, & bahkan banyak sekali victory teknologi turbo honda spt di f1 thn 80an.
Sepertinya dgn turbo/supercharger jauh lebih mudah mendongkrak power daripada N/A, justru inilah tantangannya bgm meng-explore N/A power lebih lagi atau bahkan mendekati power forced-induction.
Spt BMW, Honda skrg juga mulai pakai low-blow turbo pd Acura RDX.

Masing masing ada trade off nya

Dengan Turbocharger / Supercharger memang lebih mudah utk mesin gasoline dlm menghasilkan Torsi besar sejak RPM rendah, tetapi masalahnya :

1. Throttle Response yg dipengaruhi Turbo Lag & boost treshold (Turbocharger)
2. Membutuhkan BBM kualitas prima, terutama angka oktannya

BBM & emisi CO2 layaknya mesin kecil.

Koreksi kalau ada yg salah.
